Persuasive Essay
In 2011, various groups of people hacked into the Japanese company, SONY. All the online programs SONY had were hacked by unscrupulous groups like Lulzsec (which in native Australian means laughing at your security). Some of the networks are PlayStation Network and Sony online entertainment. Only in the UK it cost them 150 million pounds to pay the bill. If there were any case of fraud those numbers could soar up.
According to hacker’s tweets, SONY did not have a very secure protection for their users. It was relatively easy to access the users information, as SONY did not encode it. As a result, the personal information of more than 77 million users of SONYS online entertainment and PlayStation Network were stolen.
The personal information that was robbed included dates of birth, email accounts, passwords, debit and credit card numbers.
Sony apologized to its customers. But they also have offered to build real confidence for their customers. In its attempt to regain public confidence, SONY has installed many safety systems like a firewall that cost 2 million dollars to install. Also, it has hired a new security manager as well as another highly trained group of people that specializes in hackers.
The consequences of this security breach have been catastrophic for some people. For example, Mr. James Cherrick had recently invested most of his savings in SONYS stock. With this hacking, the value of the stock dropped down to half its price causing a significant loss. Mr. Cherrick now has filed for bankruptcy. Mr. Cherrick he is now poor just because a couple of people felt like making the world a worst place for everyone. Also SONY has been very affected. Experts say that it might take up to 10-20 years before customers have faith in SONY.
Why did those groups hack SONY?
They wanted to make easy money and should be ashamed of themselves. They should be spending their time working and not figuring how to ruin other people’s lives. Another theory is that the hackers are seeking revenge because they are the sons and daughters of former SONY employees that did not get what they considered a deserved promotion. What really happened was that the other employees worked way harder.
